notchy steering on my jcb 3c?

Hi i have just bought an old jcb 3c 11. the power steering seems to work but it is very jerky when turning. ie turn left slightly and 3-4 seconds after it may or may not turn left and when it does it seems much further round than wanted also the steering wheel is very notchy to turn. it is a pain when going any faster than 2nd gear. what may be causing this? Sounds like a problem with the steering pump. The notchyness you are feeling is the plungers in the "Danfoss" unit (beneath the steering wheel) probably due to no, or low, hydraulic pressure.
Check the feed hose to the pump. If you have the Leyland 4/98 engine the steering pump is driven from the timing gears via an idler gear. The bearings in this gear have a tendency to break up which could cause loss of, or intermittant drive to the pump.
