Peugeot 406 starter motor?

My Peugeot 406 was intermittantly not starting, the AA advised that the starter motor was on its way out, so I took it to a garage and they sent off to get the starter motor reconditioned, but they have come back and said the starter motor is fine but could be the solonoid, is this a possability?

hi lisa
yes a faulty solenoid will cause the car to turn over sum times then nothing at all.just a click sound.
There are copper contacts in the solenoid that fail that cause this problem.
The solenoid pushes the starter motor gear in to place and at the same time closes the copper contacts to send power to the motor ,when the contacts wear you get this intermittant starter motor problem. at times you turn the key all you hear is a click sound, thats the solenoid moving but the motor does not turn the engine over because of the bad copper contacts.
some times it can be a bad connection at the battery but if thats been checked its gona be your starter solenoid
