How can I fix my Kenwood Chef Mixer?

The motor of my kenwood Chef A701A (30 years old!) mixer no longer drives the planetary action of the beater. The head circles but the beater flops round doing nothing. The liquidiser drive works OK still. Can it be fixed? Can I fix it?

Has anyone got a exploded view of a kenwood chef a701a gearbox

Think you will find answer here

hi, just opened up my A701A gearbox and found that the small nylon cog on input shaft was split so wasn't gripping on the shaft so wasn't turning the cogs.

The small clutch can wear on the 701 and 707 series, specifically there are 2 small lugs on each component which can wear down. The system was designed so that the slow speed outlets would be diconnected when the liquidiser or other high speed attachments were fitted. It's omitted on later models from the 901 onwards I suspect largely because it was a weak spot and not really necessary.

There is a way of over-riding a damaged component. Open up the gearbox and unscrew the drive shaft with the small clutch device on it. There is a spring on the outside of the casing which separates the clutch when the liquidiser cover is off. Reverse the spring so that it is on the inside of the gearbox and screw the clutch device together so its pulled down toward the gearbox and becomes permamently engaged. I've done this on 2 machines and they have worked perfectly ever since. Of course the planet hub etc will now rotate permamantly whether or not the liquidiser cover is fitted so rememeber not to leave any loose atachments in the bowl if you are using the high speed outlet!

Hi there, if you need your Kenwood mixer repaired or updated, there is a company in Montreal that repairs the mixers in 2 days with full guarantees, etc. They get mixers shipped to them from across the world. www.kenwoodservice.com

Tell them Annette sent you!

Hi

I have a machine with the same problem Model No A701A Ser No A2376417.
I believe that I have found the answer .

If you remove the top cover (as you have already ) and view the nylon drive wheels and drive belt you will find that the larger (driven) wheel has an alloy “dog clutch” with copper coloured spring underneath it. This alloy retainer is threaded to the upper part of a pinion gear which goes into the gearbox. I believe that you will find that the thread of this alloy retainer is stripped. Kenwood no longer supply these parts. I have just spoken to Master spares on 023 8084 4338 who can supply pinion shaft gear and retaining alloy dog clutch (USED) for £11.95.. I guess that it would be best to fit all parts (will involve stripping out gearbox) or you may be lucky and if tread on existing steel pinion shaft is good , only fit alloy bit (can be fitted with out strip out of gearbox)

Good luck
