changing heater matrix?

hi folks, having problems with my 1997 espace it's overheating and blowing cold air, some mechanic has ruled out head gasket and said heater matrix gone. is this a big job???????? is there 1 or 2??????????? have flushed rad and system, new thermostat and new rad cap, only overheats now and again (couple of times a week) but still no hot air regardless, thanks.

no hot air means no water going to the heater matrix.
If the matrix is higher than the radiator then water loss would mean levels have droped below matrix.
High temperature in the engine would indicate water loss either through pipe or head gasket.
Steam , white smoke from exhaust would confirm problem.
