the element has gone. its just happened to ours too. I called whirlpool and they tried to sell me a service guarantee for £170! You can get the element from espares.co.uk for £25 (from Whirlpool its £55) AND they have a tutorial video showing how to replace it, doesn't look difficult, I reckon if you can change a plug you can do this job.
