the orange warning light comes on and the car judders sometimes cuts out. We have had it checked on a meter and they repaired a fault, but it has gone like it again and its says the same part needs replacing, but the mechanic thinks its wrong.

If an experienced mechanic with the car in front of him is not sure, how can you expect a diagnosis from that sketchy description?

First we need to know-

Exactly which engine you are talking about, eg x20xev, x18xe, x18xe1 etc.?

What fault was repaired?

What fault code is the diagnostic reporting?

sounds like the camshaft sensor these can go wrong and will give the same problems that you have.
