hello i have been driving my car quite happily for a long time, i lent it to my son and it broke down i think it is the driveshaft but how do i know for sure the engine starts perfectly but it wont drive although the gearbox is still fine it goes into all gears i wont be lending him my car again............. does anybody know how much this will cost and can i fix it myself.......

actually i think he is a bit of a boy racer, but promised me he was driving it very carefully and slowely !

jack up one side of the car and try to turn the wheel with the drive shaft with the car in gear make sure the wheels on the floor are chocked sothe car will not move if the weel turns you have a broken half shaft as there are 3 points that turn the engine and 2 wheels if one turns it means there is a break some were ( if 2 are locked they are all locked)

Some Renaults have a short driveshaft connector on the drivers side diff end. This may have stripped the spline. You will not be able to see if it is spinning or not. The output spline may also be worn but is made of harder material. The dealer will try and sell the whole shaft but this part is available for less than 20 pounds. If your car has a speedo drive on the diff you will see a road speed in gear. Of course it could be something else, good luck

check if one or the other driveshafts is spinning at the diff.have had cv joints breaking up,if none are rotating suspect clutch burnt out which will be a g/box out job,isn`t a boy racer is he?
