i have a 1993 4runner auto thats given me grief..it wouldnt move in any gear just make a pitched whining sound, was told it was the transfer so got that fixed, then decided to redo the entire engine now the box was good...but today the damn thing wont move again and the tech says the whole box needs replacing. I dint want to spend another ridiculous amount of money if i can fix it myself
Any hints?
check atf level before starting the engine and note the level. Start engine and recheck level. If the level has not gone down this would indicate pump not working and was possibly damaged on refitting engine. This would affect forward and reverse as would no drive through transfer box. If after trying drive go back to park you hear a grinding rotating noise then drive is going to transfer box.

automatic gearboxes are very expensive to repair, and not the sort of thing the average diy'er can fix, would be cheaper to get a replacement from good scrappy.
