At first it tripped the electrics. I checked the plug fuse which was ok. Then it worked for about 5 mins and then stopped altogether. The display light comes on but there are no characters displayed when you turn the dial and i thought it might work without displaying the characters but 'start' button does nothing. Help!

Hi stef, your problem is an electrical one, not caused by a plug fuse, but by a malfunctioning washing machine. Unfortunately a repair tutorial is outside of the scope of this helpage as it would require years of imparted experience, and so an experienced engineer will be required to diagnose your problem.
I have personally found early electronic malfunction of these appliances.
