forgot to say:- when shutting the valves make a note on the original postions as the return valve has normally been balanced with the rest of the system.(ie how many turns to close including 1/2 &1/4 turns etc

Check for leaks on all radiator valves, look for dried scale around the spindle underneath the caps (when rads are on as you will not see any dampness) the loss in pressure normally arises through the gland leaking especially on cheap valves that were first put on with and old open vented boilers. Try tightening the gland nut or shut down both valves undo the gland nut and wrap a little peice of ptf tape that has been twisted like a bit of string and then tighten up the nut again.
