House alarm interferes with phone line, what could the problem be?

I bought a house with an ADT alarm which is connected to the phone line, the phone has stopped working and bt have said it is something to do with the alarm, my broadband still works though which is strange. I have called ADT and they want to charge me for an engineer to come and fix it but why should I pay them when I didn't buy the alarm and neither have I used it ever, please could someone tell me what the problem could be and thanks in advance for any assistance you may give me.

locate the master phone socket, open it up,check across the a.b. terminals, you should get 49.5 to 50 volts,if you do not, call bt you have a line fault, check the telephone socket next to your panel, and remove any connection thats going into your panel.

There is no line, it's completely dead, no ringing.

if you have a phone line connected to an alarm that hasent got a filter,it will cause your line to malfuction,i.e.low volume in handset, buzzing, not being able to hear your callers,

remove the connection from the phone socket next to your panel,it will not have a broadband filter and that will interfere with your line,
