petrol gauge stuck on half a tank rover 400 1999?

just bought this car and the petrol gauge is stuck on the half way mark but the warning light still works how can i fix the gauge ?

it may be a stuck sender unit in tank,try rocking the car from side to side,or take it a run over bumpy ground to jar it free,
