My husband let the lid slam down and now the washer won't work. I can get it to fill, but it won't do anything else. How do I fix it?

Sounds like he damaged the lid switch. This stops the wash and spin cycles when you open the lid. It may not be broken, just knocked out of place. You will most likely need to remove the top of the machine to get at it.
