replace the bathtub drain?

The chrome is corroded and I want to take it out and replace it but it's old. Can I remove JUST the drain without harming the drain pipe beneath it?

yes it can be removed without damage to the drain pipe.
unscrew it from the drain and also from the bottom of the bath.
Its only fastened hand tight, an old cloth may help you grip it.
