i need to set the timing on my 3 HP briggs and stratton engine

Ignition timing? Non adjustable. Fixed at factory.

Valve timing? On the small gear that sit on the crankshaft the is a 'dot' on one of the teeth. This lines up to the teeth on the camshaft that also has a 'dot' stamped on it.

Good luck, Phil

assuming you mean valve timing, the camshaft/sprocket assembly which actuates the pushrods has, on it's outward face, a small circular indentation adjoining the sprocket teeth. this should be lined up with the corresponding mark on the drive sprocket on the crankshaft when assembled into the engine. ignition timing is electronic and not adjustable but check the flywheel has not moved on the crank.

If you mean ignition timing, it's fixed. Assuming the flywheel key is not sheared, the timing must be right.

If you mean valve timing, the cam and crank gears are marked, but not always easy to see. Set the crank to TDC, the cam so that both valves are off their seat, then mesh the gears.
