charging battery on weedeater?

I bought a Craftsman weedeater at a Thrift Store, it didn't have any instructions with it, it is 24VDC model 71.74805. My question is: how long should I leave it charge, when I plug it in the light is red, but in about 20 minutes the light turns green, but the battery is not fully charged because when I use it, it's just a matter of minutes before the battery goes dead again. How long should I leave it charge on green?

The manual says, for best results let charge for 16 hours.

From your description of the problem, I would say the batteries are bad. That weedeater uses two 12v SLA batteries and they do "ware-out" after so many charge/discharge cycles. I would go to your nearest Batteries Plus store and have it checked out. They have a Tech Center that can test the batteries, charger and may even install some new batteries to test the weedeater. Note: If you do replace the batteries, charge them up fully and recharge immediately after each use, then remove from charger.
