craftsman garden tractor model # 917.255970 eng model# 422707?

recieved a free tractor, I was told that it needed the starter and the flywheel gear replaced. I did this and the mower will turn over but not fire. I charged the battery and replaced the plugs and checked for spark, which it has. It also back fires when I play with the choke. What else can I check?

try moving the choke half-way in/out. i dont know what is up with this type of motor, but i have had the same problem with it. also check the fuel line and make sure it isnt cracked.

The flywheel nut has to be torqued to 150 Ft Pounds.
If it isn't the flywheel key is subject to shearing. A sheared
key will cause the problems you describe.
