How can i clean a sponge air filter (K&N Style but sponge on the top)?

I have a sponge air filter which is attached to my carb like a K&N air filter woud be. It is currently flooded with 2 stroke oil and probably other stuff. What is the best way to clean the filter, i also find out when it is clean it only allows me to get 50mph, i used to be able to get 65 with no struggle, could my Clutch rollers be gone ?

i have always cleaned them in petrol by dipping the filter directly into a pot of it.after that clean it out by blasting it out with a hose.then i would blow the water out with a compressor attachment.then set it on a radiator for a bit to fully dry it.final thing rub a bit of 2stroke on for the dust to stick to.YOUR FILTER WILL BE GOOD AS NEW

The best way to clean the filter is rinse it and squeeze it in some clean fresh petrol then let it dry completely before refitting it,the slowing down problem could be either a drop in compression or a gradual blocking of the exhaust pipe with burnt 2 stroke oil.
