How can I service my Singer 427 sewing machine please?

I would like to give my sewing machine a service but have no idea where to start. Can anyone tell me where I can find this help or indeed, where I can begin to thoroughly clean various parts, particularly the foot pedal which either goes like lightening or grunts along slowly. The thread keeps getting knotted around the bobbin after a few inches of sewing so something is very wrong here also. Any advice would be very welcome. Thanks

Hello Olivia,
Take the top off the machine and take the metal bottom off the machine, get some soft grease and just put a blob on the nylon gear on the top and on the nylon gear on the bottom, oul with WD40 all other moving parts.
Top tension about 4 or 5 and make sure you just pull the bottom thread through with slight resistence, if you have the clam type foot control thgat comes with the green 427 peem the rubber back on the bottom and indo the screw, it may be tight so you may break a bit of plastic of but you can glue it back on easily, inside the control there will be a ceramic tub e and at the end there is an adjusting screw, just slacken it off slightly and close the control without screwing it down and test, keep adjusting until you get it right, if you have the brown 427 with button type foot control undo the four screws and you will find the adjusting screw on the end.
