How can I fix my whirlpool washing machine?

Spin cyle is not working regardless of wash distribution. I have been told this could be the switch activated by the lid. What is required to fix this problem? It is a Whirlpool 6ALSQ8000JQ top loading machine. I bought this machine in 2003.
