Passat sport 2001. Diesal cuts out when accelerating fast?

Please help. When I accelerate quickly my Passat sport TDI 2001 cuts out loosing all power. It's fine when I accelate very slowly. Any ideas ???

i would check/change the fuel filter.

Seriously. There are times when you need to accelerate quickly i.e onto a A road to join traffic. Cant be cutting out when I join an A road !!!
