How can I fix my Ford focus titanium tdci fuel pump problems?

I have a focus titanium tdci on an 07 plate. Its done 52000 miles and the fuel pressure regulator valve is apparently low causing the car to suddenly pull up during acceleration. Is this common for a 4 year old car? And any ideas how to solve it. Iv been quoted £860 to replace the fuel pump. It apparently only comes in a full unit. Is this true?
