Vauxhall Combo van gearbox emergency?

My husband is stranded on the mainland trying to get home to the island where we live. His Vauxhall Combo Van (2004 model - ex post office) will not go into 1st, 2nd or reverse gears, although 3rd, 4th and 5th are ok. Any ideas?

small black plastic rod at rear of g/box/engine on the selector mechanism,usually the g/box side that pops off,press it back on to get home,common problem!
