zanussi essential 1400 spins slowly but dosen't speed up?

my zanussi essential 1400 starts the spin cycle in slow mode as it should but dosen't speed up at all!
Any help would be much appreciated.

check the drain filter area and check the motor brushes.Single heavy items will cause this type of issue but it isn't a fault its a protection system working
