Land Rover is Smoking from the Exhaust, What could be the problem?

My Land Rover Defender 90 X reg ia smoking from the exhaust and getting worse.

Any suggestions or tips would be most appreciated.

What engine is fitted to it ?
If it is any turbo diesel, then your turbo seals could be on the way out.
Should the seal completely fail, then engine oil will be fed into the inlet manifold causing the engine to run away and eventually blow up. ( Look on youtube for examples of this ). If this happens the only option for stopping the engine is to stall it or block up the air intake. Turning the ignition off will not work.
Is your engine using oil ? Does the hose / tube ex the turbo to the manifold have gross signs of oil in it ? If so, replace the turbo ( and block off the EGR while you're at it ).

Perhaps a blocked injector if smoke is black
Or
Worn piston rings if smoke is blue.
Could do with a bit more info

i would try nicorette gum first and then move on to patches. that will soon stop it smoking.
