steering locks up whilst driving my renault megane ?

i can be driving down the road and the steering will just lock up and the speedo goes down and all lights come on, why is this??

If this is as serious as it appears, the car may have had a recall, check with the dealer, if they are reluctant to play ball, then contact BBC watchdog(or at least threaten to contact watchdog).
