no offence taken, i agree with you about renaults, just needed to make sure i had not forgotten anything, i have let out some slack on the handbrake cable, going to try a puller tomorrow, and i expect the whole thing to fall apart, still onwards and upwards. bill.

For Megane 99-02
If shoes are binding and stopping drum from coming off, mr Haynes manual suggests this-
Slacken hbrake cable right off.
Turn drum so one wheel stud hole is at about 4 o clock position.
If you look in hole you should be able to see handbrake lever.
Push in on lever and try to force it towards rear of car at same time.
This allows lever to slip past it's stop pin and should allow more clearance between drum and shoes.
