my washer stops after filling with water?

my washer filled up, but it wouldn't start agitating. took clothes out and tried the spin cycle hoping water would drain - it won't work - anytime I make a selection I hear a click on the inside like it's going to start the cycle I select but nothing happens. It's just sitting there with water in it. I even pushed the start button again as well as the rinse but nothing happened. This is one old unit that has the dryer that sits on top of it. Thanks!

The brushes are probably worn. You can usually get a pair from a local stockists and they may just be screwed in either side of the motor. The washing machine fills but the motor is unable to turn due to the brushes being worn and not making contact with motor.
