my 1995 Ford Escort 1.9 litre shows overheating ?

My escort 1995 1.9 liter Gauge shows that it is overheating but it is not.I added coolant and it poured out of my overflow. Is this the water pump my problem?My heater is putting out hot heat so I don't think that it is the thermostat. Am I wrong? Or is it my gauge.
