battery charge fault or alternator problem?

I replaced the battery yesterday on my Citroen Xsara Picasso 1.6, Y plate. Since it the battery charge fault light has been on. Any advice on what the problem could be.

Prior to the new battery did you by any chance jump start the car? If so the alternator may have been damaged.
