why is my car using too much fuel?

i own a mark 5 golf tdi sport, 105bhp, 6 spd gearbox, the problem is im only averaging 42 mpg,if computer says 450 miles left in fuel tank i will only be able to do 360-370 miles.... i have recently read that golf mark 5 gttdi 140bhp average 50+mpg what could be the problem.

I believe you will find that the computer calculates range based on your current driving style,
If you set it following filling up with fuel you should see the range recalculate frequently depending on how you drive.
Drive with care, lift off early rather than brake hard and you should see the range (miles you can travel on the fuel in the tank ) improve.
Try it and see
