Gear shift button will not depress when ignition is on?

I have a 1999 Ford Galaxy 4x4 V6 auto. When the ignition is on the button on the gear shift will not depress - also brake lights will not work. Is this mechanical or electronic problem and how do I solve it

The shift interlock works via the brake switch. This is quite a common fault. The part is not expensive and is easy to fit.
