Hoover HSC170 been making screaching noises?

Please advise me about this high pitch screaching noise its been happening for few months now and recently sounds alot worst , is this the belt or bearings ? I went into two shops and they said bearings but then one blog said that its the belt if noise lessens on reverse !
I have phoned hoover parts and they want £15 for belt and the shop assistant said if bearings I would be better off buying a new one ...
Please help me .

there are one or two things that cause such a noise on this machine, one is the jockey pulley the belt rides in,the other is the drum bearings, and they are quite right,if its the bearings your cheaper to buy new machine,i worked for hoover as a field engineer for twenty years,i have never had a drive belt make a noise,my money would go on the pulley,or pulleys, depends what machine you have
