Sounds like someone had started a cycle by pressing the start button. Even though you change the selector to off, or onto any other selection, once the start button is pressed the cycle has started. To cancel a wash cycle (hence stop the pump from starting) hold down the start buttong for about 3-5 seconds until the END light luminates. The pump will then stop and changing the selector won't make the pump start.
