car keeps stopping?

holden commodore 1996 vs. starts then the engine dies. lately I have been running the tank dry.

If you have been running the tank dry then you may well have picked up deposits from the bottom of the tank.
There will most probably be a fuel line filter and I would suggest that you remove and clean or replace this filter.
