jaguar x-type in limp mode ,2004 diesel?

whilst waiting in a traffic queue the car made a loud bang.the car is now in limp mode.it idles ok,but then limps upto 50mph. there are no warning lights on the dash or any signs of any problem.any advice appreciated.
