Is it time for a new dishwasher?

I have a Kenmore Ultra Wash II dishwasher.
It is probably about 20 years old.
It worked fine until recently I noticed that the dishes and silverware have a white (coating?) on them. The door for the soap doesn't open and it feels like the temperature of the water is very hot!
I tried different types of soap but the "coating" is still on the dishes, glasses, and silverware.
Time for a new one?

you did well to have it working for 20 years,,,check around the stores for a price on a new one, a lot has changed in the world of dishwashers in 20 years, get a new one,,,if you can,

have you checked your spray arms?you must clean the arms out once a week or the debrie will be shot out like a sand blaster and mark your dishes, also check the rinse aid to make sure it is going into the machine, too much aid will leave streaks on dishes, too little will leave dots on dishes.
