To find out if its rings gone, pour a table spoon of oil into cylinder and if that gives you a little more compression, then its the rings. Otherwise check if head gaskets blown or tight/damaged valves(remove rocker cover) and turn engine over to see them moving or not! isn't the XR a sporty XL?

if its a two stroke engine .then piston rings could be seized.
