hard to get into reverse?

when selceting reverse its hard to get into, when it does go in it is then hard to get into third and forth, feels like its gone to far one way or the other.my car is a golf 16se 1999

if it goes into gear ok with the engine off you may have clutch problems,if not suspect worn gear linkage/excess play/g/box
