Peugeot 206 Indicator Light stays on (tried new stalk)?

I have a problem with my 206 where the left indicator stays on and doesn't cancel. I have purchased another indicator stalk but that does not help, in fact made it worse as the right indicator became more sensitive.

When you indicate left you can hear the clicker but the light stays on. I have had to remove the fuse so the bulb don't burn out/drain the battery

its 1999 (v reg) , was in accident in 2001 but it was a minor one and indicators have worked fine up until last week

the stalk was not new, it was from a breakers yard, but my original one did not have a horn at the end , this one did , but all other connectors the same

mechanic said it was the fuse control unit and I replaced it (its by siemens and has the peugeot and citroen logo) and now the indicators do work but they are temperamental. So if I indicate left or right it will either come on or not but if I hold onto it , it works. It seems to work better when I am turning the steering wheel in the same direction as indicator??

thanks

I fail to understand how a brand new stalk would make it worse. What year is your car? Has it ever been in an accident?
