you have probably just pulled it from hinge/pivot piont happens alot get your head in the foot well and you should be able to see where the lugs on the end of the handle should be located put a bit of vaseline/butter on the lugs and gently push the back in and next time slowly/gently but firmly pull the lever and dont just pull it in a straight line try to follow the arc the the end of the lever wants to take and this should'nt happen again
