where is the speed sensor on a renault megane scenic 1600?

my speedometer keeps going off and after a while works again it has been suggested that i change the speed sensor but have not a clue where it is and how to change it

Speed sensor is located behind the gear box. In my Megane Scenic mk1 2.0 8V -99 You cannot really see it, but u can feel it with hand sticking out upwards from gear box. 3 wires go in.

To get old one out u need to first remove the safety pin going through the old sensor. U can feel the pin also with your hand. After removing the pin (and cables) it is possible to spin the sensor and pull it out. My sensor didn't have screw thread but it was so stuck that I had to spin it out.

Check also the cable connections because at least in my car the problem seemed to be more the connection than actual sensor. (Corroded connector / broken wires). Still I changed both the sensor and the connector. Brand new sensor & old connector that looked to be in good condition. So far (> 70 km) my problem speedometer problems seems to be solved. \0/

where is the speed sensor for a renault megane 1.5?

I have just replaced my speed sensor on a 1998 Scenic 1. It is placed on top of the gearbox, and can only be accessed from under the car. The plastic sensor has three wires connected to it. It may have a retainer pin that is keeps it in place, pull this out and the lift the sensor out. If it has no pin, simply pull it out.

My sensor was actually OK, it worked fine, when I spun the little pin at the end of the sensor, it showed up on the speedometer. However the plastic connector in the gearbox is damaged and does not turn. Renault tells me that this little plastic pin is not sold seperatly! I am not going to replace the gearbox, only to get the speedometer working!

This sensor is located at the edge of bell auto box housing. Right under the Black plastic thermostat housing of the engine. Not easily seen. Most problem due to the connector contact problem and not the sensor itself. Direct solder on is recommended in other forum's feedback.

"Under the bonnet" = From standing at the front its at the back, behind the engine, attached to the gearbox, slightly right of center.

Dear Shipton,
Kindly provide more detail as per "under the bonnet". The entire engine is under the bonnet so it will help if you could explain further.
Thank you

I have just had a similar problem with my Renault Scenic. Its the Gearbox speed sensor that needs replacing. Part cost me £30 & £25 labour although i reckon on watching i could have done it myself if i knew what i was looking for.Its located under the bonnet on a Renault Scenic so i gather its the same for you.Its a 5 min job....no tools required just unplug the faulty one & replace it with the new one! Hope this helps.Wayne
