This sounds like a bearing problem,the bearing at the rear becomes worn and allows the drum to rub against the inside of the casing etc which maybe the cause .The front bearing is more than likely the cause and is a felt strip or nylon pads depending on models which also wear out and are situated around the ouside of the door opening . When worn out you end up with metal on metal which will produce metal shavings and the noise described.Be careful replacing the felt ring as if it has worn a lot the edge of the drum can be very sharp!
