Can I put new pads on the existing rotors?

If the rotors are smooth and dont need turning, can I put pads on both the front and back wheels? Brake shops say you have to put on new rotors...Is that true...I have done this several times before...I use a "c" clamp and then replace...but do I really have to replace rotors?

As long as the disc's are not badly pitted/deep grooves/rusty or distorted, there is no need to replace them, just fit new pads, and take it easy with the braking for the first 50 miles or so untill the pads bed into the disc's
