have you checked bulbs! bulbs have a certain lifetime and can blow within weeks/days of each other-you dont often get told when one is out,but you are more likely to be told when both out,-if ok you need to make sure you have a live to brake light switch if so switch suspect.

what car is it on? the switch will be at top of the brake pedal, this sounds like the cause to me. you shouldnt have to remove anything to get to it, i am a mechanic and i have never removed anything to get to any on the cars i have ever done and i have been doing this 8 years hahah hope this helps you

As you have'nt told us the make/model of your car it's difficult to give a definate answer!!! normally the switch is mounted under the dash on the box assembly that the brake pedal is fitted to, you might have to remove some trim to gain access, but with no info on what car you have who knows!!
