glow plugs?

i put a tester on the ring loop that screws to the glow plugs then a feed to the battery but the light on my tester did not come on, does, should it be live

the glow plug top where you fasten the wire to is +12v when switched on so your tester has to go on the glowplug top and to the negative point on the battery to make a circuit
