Hotpoint WMD960 won't start a cycle?

My Hotpoint WMD960 turns on, allows me to select a cycle, starts, locks the door and then does nothing! No water pumps in, nothing happens other than the clock running itself down. Has anyone got any suggestions before I call an engineer out?
