The Air Con in my Ford Focus has stopped working. I have a basic question...should I have done some maintenance? (Does it need topping up with water or some fluid?) Or is this always a job for the garage?
get the system re gassed and get dye put into the system to show if any leaks are present....if the aircon is working, with the car idling when you switch the air con on and off you will hear the aircon compressor click in and out.
use the aircon once a week winter and summer as then the gas circulates and the oil suspended in the gas gets to lubricate all the internal seals.

In general there is very little you can do yourself, you will need to use a specialist aircon service to top up the gas and oil levels and check for leaks, normally costs around £60 have it done every year before the start of summer
