Singer 514 not sewing?

The threaded needle goes up and down but no stitch is made. Should the bit surrounding the bobbin also be rotating in order to make the stitch?

Hi, my singer 514 is not pulling the material through and the dogs are not moving either manually or auto. can you help?

Just wanted to thank you very much for your help, Ken. Have replaced the hook gear - it undid with an allen key but I needed one in inches (imperial) rather than metric (machine is about 40 yrs old). Then retimed it and all's well. I'm delighted. Thanks again.

Hello Ken

Many thanks for your answer. I turned it on its side, removed the bottom plate and turned the hand wheel. The gears seem OK until the nylon gear wheel underneath intersects with the gear wheel right under the needle plate. At that point it's obvious that some of the teeth have sheared off the second gear wheel - I mean the one that is vertically under the needle plate. I wonder if I could replace it? It looks as if it could be taken apart with an allen key. Hope this makes sense? I'd rather repair it than give up on it...

Hello Miranda,
It sounds like the top gear has broken, take the top off the machine and look at the nylon gear directly in front of you, turn the balance wheel and if the gear does not turn that is your problem.
