transit gearbox fault?

I have just bought an '05 85 T280 swb transit. The gear stick is very floppy and I have problems selecting 2nd although all gears will select with care. Does this sound like selector problem and if so do I work from the cab or under the van. Any suggestions welcome. Richard

Thanks cdc. Did as you said and could see the cable outer moving. Removed and re-krimped both ends and a lot better. Will replace cable. Thanks

get someone to operate gears and have a look for play/wear at the top of the g/box where the gearshift cables attach,in older transits there was a pinch bolt which came loose and caused problems, sorry don`t know if the newer transits are modified, the cables may need adjusting also,if you cant see any problems then the play wear may be in the selector housing where the cables attach, this can be removed, think there are about six 10mm bolts holding the housing on.
